Among other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small: to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born; on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter.
For a long time after it was ushered into this world of sorrow and trouble, by the parish surgeon, it remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all; in which case it is somewhat more than probable that these memoirs would never have appeared; or, if they had, that being comprised within a couple of pages, they would have possessed the inestimable merit of being the most concise and faithful specimen of biography, extant in the literature of any age or country.

作者簡介
法月綸太郎(Norizuki Rintaro)1964年出生於日本島根縣松江市。就讀京都大學時,加入推理界人才輩出的「推理小說研究會」,和綾行人、我孫子武丸等人都是「新本格派」推理作家的代表人物。1988年,他以《密閉教室》入圍江戶川亂步賞,因此獲得推理大師島田莊司的大力推薦而出道。1989年發表以「法月綸太郎」為主角的《雪密室》和《誰彼》,從此展開了「法月綸太郎」偵探系列,如《為了賴子》、《一的悲劇》、《再一次的紅色惡夢》、《法月綸太郎的冒險》等。其後,他以《二的悲劇》(皇冠即將出版)入選「這本推理小說真厲害!」1995年度10大最佳推理小說以及「探偵小說研究會」1975至1994年本格推理小說BEST100,2002年則以 〈都市傳說〉榮獲第55屆日本推理作家協會賞短篇小說獎,2005年再以長篇《去問人頭吧》贏得第5屆本格推理小說大賞。在他的作品中,常反映了身為作者內心的苦惱;而擔任「偵探」角色的法月綸太郎亦常融入事件中,與當事人同喜同悲,他也因此獲得了「煩惱作家」的稱號。

Inheriting the mantle of revolutionary biologist from Darwin, Watson, and Crick, Richard Dawkins forced an enormous change in the way we see ourselves and the world with the publication of The Selfish Gene. Suppose, instead of thinking about organisms using genes to reproduce themselves, as we had since Mendel’s work was rediscovered, we turn it around and imagine that "our" genes build and maintain us in order to make more genes. That simple reversal seems to answer many puzzlers which had stumped scientists for years, and we haven’t thought of evolution in the same way since.
Why are there miles and miles of "unused" DNA within each of our bodies? Why should a bee give up its own chance to reproduce to help raise her sisters and brothers? With a prophet’s clarity, Dawkins told us the answers from the perspective of molecules competing for limited space and resources to produce more of their own kind. Drawing fascinating examples from every field of biology, he paved the way for a serious re-evaluation of evolution. He also introduced the concept of self-reproducing ideas, or memes, which (seemingly) use humans exclusively for their propagation. If we are puppets, he says, at least we can try to understand our strings.

一 冷酷仙境──電梯、無聲、肥胖
電梯以十分緩慢的速度繼續上升。大概是在上升,我想。不過我沒有把握。其速度實在過於緩慢,以致我失去了方向感。或許下降也未可知,抑或不上不下也不一定。我只不過斟酌前後情況而姑且算它上升罷了。僅僅是推測,無半點根據。也可能上至十二樓下到第三樓──繞地球一周又返回原處。總之無從知曉。
這電梯同我公寓中那進化得如同提水筒一般了無裝飾的廉價電梯毫無共同之處。由於差異太大,我竟懷疑二者並非為同一目的製造的具有同一功能且冠以同一名稱的機械裝置。兩架電梯的差距之大,怕已達到了人們想像力的極限。
問題首先是面積。我現在乘的電梯寬敞得足以作為一間小辦公室來使用,足以放進寫字檯放進文件櫃放進地拒,此外再隔出一間小廚房都顯得綽綽有餘,甚至領進三頭駱駝栽一棵中等椰子樹都未嘗不可。其次是清潔,清潔得如同一口新出廠的棺木。
